The 7th Annual V&A Summer Fete was on this weekend, and we were lucky enough to be helping out on the Penguin stand created by Dave Pearson, co-hosted by the massively talented cover designer Clare Skeats.
The Summer Fete, run by Scarlet Projects, takes place in the stunning courtyard at the centre of the V&A, and features a variety of stands by young designers and design groups, all riffing on the theme of, well, summer fetes:
The Village Fete is a showcase of the best of young British contemporary design. It’s a unique event, where everyone can join in - families and children as well as the creative community. A carefully selected group of designers (the best of the up and coming, as well as some of the more established stars) are invited to conceive and run the stalls, offering games to play, competitions to enter, and prizes to win. Design is shown as being accessible, clever, entertaining and totally inclusive.
Our stand gave punters the chance to design their very own Penguin covers against the clock, using blank grids and a variety of titles, including The Outsider by Albert Camus, The Witches by Roald Dahl, and War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. Kids and adults all took part, and created a fantastic range of really inspired covers, especially considering they only had two minutes to design each one. We particularly liked a six year old's response to War & Peace, and a rather brilliant illustrated design for The Outsider.
Just glad we get more than two minutes to work on our designs...
